Money Saving Tips on Buying Household Appliances

from: Coupon Warriors

When buying basic household appliances such as a refrigerator, a washing machine, a stove, or a heater consider how you can save on those purchases.

Following are some money-saving tips on buying appliances for your new residence.

1. Evaluate your wants and needs

Appliances will always be part of our daily lives. However, with a starter home, you need to evaluate and determine what the most important household appliances to buy first are.

First, think about what you would need when moving to a new house. Would you prefer buying a fridge in favour of a new sofa, or a convenient ice-making machine instead of a reasonably priced fridge?

Add-on, or luxury items may be important, but even these require much thinking. Purchasers need to distinguish between necessary household items and strictly luxury items that can wait.

Keep in mind that add-on, luxury appliances and fixtures will need to consumer extra electricity.

2. Size

Accommodating your newly purchased electrical appliances can be fun if you have enough available space. It probably wouldn't be wise to buy a huge refrigerator when you only have a small space available for your immediate kitchen needs.

Parents should also consider whether the appliances they buy will supply all of their family's needs. A 5.0-kilogram washer would definitely not be sufficient for a family of five.

In such cases, consider buying heavy-duty major appliances. These will save more in the long run than buying equipment that can only accommodate the needs of only one or two people.

3. Consult with comparison shops

The 1999 Consumer Literacy Consortium report provides enough reasons for consumers to compare prices before buying major appliances.

If people are determined to buy, they will usually shop at the first appliance center they visit, instead of shopping around and comparing prices at nearby stores.

The consumer report provided information pointing to the benefits of comparing prices on the market before buying. It also noted the importance of shopping online for auctions and sales.

In many cases, leveraging on second hand appliances can be better than buying a new one, especially when looking at similar features and the durability standard.

This kind of intelligent buying will save you hundreds of dollars as expected and more savings on other home stuffs. In turn, these savings allow you to get additional luxury items.

4. Annual buying guide

Local libraries usually keep consumer literacy reports, such as buying guides, ratings and prices on some major appliances nationwide. These reports provide exclusive and substantial information on performance (durability), price, and quality, among other specifications.

The reports also maintain a database, which shows comparative prices from coast to coast and details on handling and packaging of merchandise.

5. Where to Buy

Sometimes, the name of the merchandiser is not the prime consideration when buying several major appliances for your home.

Of prime importance is finding appliance items with the performance and features that match specifically your family's needs and wants. It's also about searching the local market and the net to find shopping exclusives and sales.

As well as helping your budget, these buying techniques can provide additional leverage on saving for future appliance needs.

6. Negotiate

After carefully reviewing the features of a particular appliance you finally decide to buy. The next step involves negotiation, which takes place in almost every part of the selling process.

The seller is intent on getting his ticket price, while the buyer wants to get the best possible price. Your best bet lies in your ability to make compromises.

Most stores are prepared to drop prices, depending on how badly they want to make the sale. And the customer can expect a better price if they ask for it, or when they're buying refurbished items.
